Through collaboration, the AMICAL Consortium raises the quality of libraries, technology and learning across the international liberal arts institutions that form our membership.

Membership benefits

Our programs build and leverage the connections between libraries, technology and the classroom as spaces where information is used and created in study and scholarship.

AMICAL’s programs aim for outcomes in the following strategic focus areas:

  • Cost-saving on library and information resources
  • Leadership in libraries, academic technology, and centers for learning & teaching
  • Innovative liberal arts pedagogy and scholarship – with a particular focus on:
    • Information & Digital Literacies
    • Digital Liberal Arts
    • Open Educational Resources & Practices

AMICAL’s core programs include:

  • Consortial price negotiation on licensed library databases and other library/academic resources
  • Online staff and faculty development: events, cohort training programs, and peer consulting
  • Micro-grants for online professional development
  • An online community network and collaboration tools

Becoming a member

AMICAL membership is at the institutional level.

In order to better determine whether AMICAL membership makes sense for your institution, please take a look at AMICAL’s Operational Guidelines and Membership Agreements:

Eligibility for invitation for full membership in AMICAL requires the following:

  1. The institution is a regular member of AAICU
  2. The institution offers a Bachelor’s (or higher level) degree program;
  3. The institution supports within its programs a liberal arts curriculum;
  4. The institution is accredited by a North American accrediting agency;
  5. The institution is located outside the United States and is formally licensed to operate in its home country.

Other options for AMICAL membership include Affiliate or Network membership, with fewer eligibility requirements and certain types of limits on membership benefits, as described in our Operational Guidelines.

Interested institutions are encouraged to attend some of our upcoming events as an invited guest, to see if AMICAL feels like a good match.

AMICAL has been very successful in sourcing substantial grant funding in the past, and we are working on new grants for future programs. While we work on upcoming grants, our work is for the moment supported primarily by annual membership fees, depending on factors related to the size and location of the institution.
