American Academy in Rome
The mission of the American Academy in Rome, founded in 1894, is to foster the pursuit of advanced research and independent study in the fine arts and humanities. The American Academy in Rome awards the Rome Prize to a select group of 30 artists and scholars every year, who are invited to Rome to pursue their work in an atmosphere conducive to intellectual and artistic freedom, interdisciplinary exchange, and innovation. The Academy further hosts every year a number of senior scholars or artists as Residents; the recipients of Affiliated Fellowships in the humanities; and a number of visiting artists and scholars. It also sponsors conferences, public exhibitions, concerts and lectures, as well as several summer programs in the humanities.
