Financial support
Our financial support program gets updated each year – read carefully the guidelines below to determine your eligibility.
Financial support is available for AMICAL members attending the Conference. This support is made possible primarily through AUP’s grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for “Building Leadership and Capacity for Digital Liberal Arts across AMICAL.” Support from additional AMICAL 2023 sponsors contributes to covering members’ registration costs.

Overview
Our financial support program has the following aims:
- Enabling conference participation by colleagues who can have broad impact at their institution or the consortium in AMICAL’s mission-relevant areas
- Improving the value, reach and impact of the Conference for AMICAL members, by enabling the participation of colleagues who are likely to contribute effectively to the Conference program and to participate actively in it.
- Enabling conference participation by AMICAL’s Digital Liberal Arts Cohort Programs participants, in order to develop their DLA knowledge and skills while facilitating the sharing of their experience and expertise with other AMICAL members
Three levels of support are available to AMICAL members, depending on their institution’s membership category and their role in relation to the conference and the consortium:
Categories of AMICAL membership and conference roles | Registration fees | Accommodations | Airfare |
Individuals from Full/Affiliate member institutions who are contributing to the conference program, or are targeted specifically by grant funding for the conference. This includes:
|
✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
All other individuals from Full/Affiliate member institutions | ✅ | ✅ | |
All other individuals from Network member institutions | ✅ |
What’s covered with registration?
Registration covers your participation in all conference events (program sessions, lunches, breaks and any all-conference dinners), as well as group transportation between airport and Ifrane (on specific days). For those staying at the Al Akhawayn Conference Center (ACC), registration covers transportation to and from campus on event days.
What’s covered for accommodations?
For Full/Affiliate members: AMICAL will be covering the cost of accommodations, including breakfasts, at either the Al Akhawayn Conference Center (ACC) or in AUI on-campus housing. (You may view more details on our Accommodation page.) Lunch will be provided on all conference days, and all-conference dinners will be provided on certain conference days as well.
Because of limited room availability and strong interest in the conference:
- You will not be able to choose the location or room type. We will assign you a room at one of these locations based on availability and the priority of your request. You should therefore register for the conference, and request your accommodations there, as soon as you know you will be attending (and whether you will be also attending the pre-conference day, or just the two main conference days).
- We can only cover rooms for the nights surrounding your conference participation. Specifically:
- Check-in on the the day before your first participation day
- Check-out from Ifrane on the the day after your last participation day
- Participants wishing to stay in Morocco beyond the 27 May check out date will need to look for alternative accommodations, since AUI housing will not be able to provide rooms beyond the conference. An optional sightseeing trip to Fes will be organized after the event with a separate sign up that will involve an overnight stay in Fes. The costs of the trip will be up to participants to cover, including ground transport to the airports of Casablanca or Fes afterwards.
What’s covered for Airfare?
If your airfare is covered by AMICAL, you will be reimbursed up to a limit based on observed airfares for:
- economy class
- departure from the principal airport nearest your institution
- ‘reasonable’ itinerary (1 stop max if possible, daytime departures, etc.)
- least expensive option among similar itineraries
See AMICAL 2023 - Travel & transport for information about arrival airports. Note that the (AMICAL-covered) ground transportation from Casablanca is longer (4.5 hours) than from Fez (1 hour), but that the total travel time (air + ground) through Casablanca is in many cases shorter and less expensive than through Fes. Choose an itinerary with a reasonable balance between total travel time and cost.
BEWARE OF SCAM “TRAVEL AGENCIES”: there have been cases of scam “travel agencies” contacting attendees to help them with reservations. Only book a ticket with a service or agency that you are familiar with and trust.
How to check if you’re eligible for airfare support
Support for all roles listed above will be provided automatically, and you do not need to apply.
To verify whether you are eligible for airfare support, check the following list:
If you believe there is a mistake concerning your eligibility, contact contact@amicalnet.org.
How to get reimbursed for airfare
If you have been offered airfare support, buy your ticket as soon as possible, before airfares go up, since you will be responsible for covering airfare that exceeds the limit we’ve indicated. You do not need to register before purchasing your airfare, however you will need to know whether you will be attending the pre-conference day (which requires specific roles or acceptance for a workshop), or just the two main conference days.
Instructions for airfare reimbursement have been emailed to those concerned. After reading the instructions, you may send any questions to contact@amicalnet.org.
